Sacred Gifts From the Earth Art Piece Statement Pendant
This piece was created in a challenge with 23 other metalsmiths/jewelers using similar stones to bring awareness to using Ethical practices in sourcing, purchasing and supporting gemstone and metal suppliers in this industry. We all came up with different concepts and art. This is my result. Check out Ethical in Action on instagram for more details.
Sacred Gifts from The Earth - Sterling silver, 24 karat gold keum boo, sapphire slice, chalcedony and turquoise. Value: $1250 This was due to sell in auction but unfortuenaly the minimum bid of $510 was not met. Most of the proceeds of this piece will be donated to causes in supporting ethical and responsible mining and working conditions for miners and cutters in the gem industry.
The beauty of the gifts we are given from our natural world seem endless. Yet they aren't endless. They are most definitely finite in supply. They are rare and difficult, often dangerous, to obtain. I wanted to create a piece that reflected that these gemstones we pull from our natural world are sacred and a gift to be held in reverence. These hands offer them to the Universe from the fire in which they were formed. The gemstones are surrounded with a golden aura of respect and honor they deserve.
I love making pieces that reference the natural world as inspiration. I hand fabricate using ancient and traditional metalsmithing and fine jewelry techniques. Here I used texturing, forging, hand engraving, stone setting and the ancient Korean gilding technique of Keum boo. It is a large piece measuring in at 3.25" by 2.45" on a ombre oxidized cable chain in 16", 18" or 20" long. Solid construction of sterling silver and 24 karat gold with a charcoal patina.
